Plumbers, HVAC & Electricians: When Someone Asks ChatGPT for a Recommendation, Does Your Name Come Up?
Picture a homeowner at 9pm. Water heater's leaking into the garage. Ten years ago they'd flip open the phone book. Five years ago they'd Google "plumber near me." Tonight? A growing number of them type this into ChatGPT: "Who's a reliable plumber in Round Rock that does emergency water heater replacement?"
And here's the gut-punch: if the AI doesn't know you exist, you don't get the call. It'll happily name three of your competitors instead — the ones who did the boring work of being findable.
This isn't a future problem. It's happening now, and most contractors have no idea whether they're in the conversation or invisible. Let's fix that.
How AI Decides Who to Recommend
ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews, Perplexity — they don't invent contractors out of thin air. They pull from the same public web signals that already power search: your website content, your Google Business Profile, your reviews, and third-party mentions (directories, local news, supplier pages). If those signals are thin or messy, the AI has nothing to grab onto and skips you.
The good news for underdogs: this is winnable. A 25-year family HVAC shop with a clear, well-structured web presence can absolutely get named over a private-equity chain with a bloated, confusing site. AI rewards clarity, not just budget.
The Practical Playbook
1. Say exactly what you do, where, and for whom
Vague sites lose. "We offer quality service" tells an AI nothing. Instead, spell it out in plain language on your site: "We install and repair tankless and standard water heaters in Round Rock, Pflugerville, and Cedar Park, including same-day emergency replacement." Give each core service its own page — water heaters, drain clearing, repipes, gas lines. AI (and Google) can only recommend you for what you clearly claim.
2. Answer the questions homeowners actually ask
Add an FAQ section that mirrors real customer language: "How much does it cost to replace a 40-gallon water heater?" "Do you offer 24/7 emergency electrical service?" "How fast can you get out for a no-AC call in summer?" These question-and-answer chunks are exactly the format AI pulls from when it composes a recommendation.
3. Nail your Google Business Profile
Your GBP is a primary data source for both Maps and AI. Make sure your categories are specific (Plumber, HVAC Contractor, Electrician — plus secondary categories), your service areas are listed, your hours are current, and your services are filled out. A profile that lists "emergency service" and "water heater installation" gives the machines something to match on.
4. Feed the review engine
Reviews are trust fuel. AI and searchers both weigh them heavily. Ask every satisfied customer — literally text them a link after the job. Bonus points when reviews mention specifics: "replaced our AC condenser in July, out same day." Those detailed reviews become the raw material for a recommendation.
5. Get mentioned off your own site
When your name and address appear consistently across trusted local sources — your city's business directory, supplier locators, a chamber page, a local news mention — AI treats you as a real, established operator. Consistency matters: same business name, same phone, same address everywhere.
6. Make sure the site actually works — and everyone can use it
A slow, broken, or inaccessible site undercuts everything. If a screen reader can't navigate your "Request Service" form, or your site takes eight seconds to load on a phone in a driveway, you lose the lead and send weak signals to search. We fix the real code behind accessibility — not a bolt-on widget that pretends to. (We're a web shop, not a law firm, but doing it right protects you and wins you customers.)
The Honest Bottom Line
Nobody — not us, not anyone — can guarantee you'll be the #1 name ChatGPT spits out. Anyone promising that is selling you smoke. What we can do is make you the obvious, clean, credible choice the algorithms keep bumping into: more visible, more findable, more of the phone ringing.
Right now, the contractors winning these AI recommendations aren't the loudest — they're the clearest. That can be you.
