Med Spas, Salons & Barbershops: Your Work Is Fire — So Why Does Your Google Profile Look Mid?
Here's the gut-punch: someone leaves your chair looking incredible. Fresh fade. Glowing skin. The best brows they've ever had. They tell everyone they know in person — and then they go home and never leave a review. Meanwhile the spot two blocks over has 340 reviews and a full appointment book, even though half their work is mid at best.
That's the problem. Your craft is elite. Your Google presence looks like you opened last week. Let's close that gap — no gimmicks, no fake reviews, just the moves that actually work.
Why great work doesn't automatically turn into reviews
People leave reviews when they're upset. They rarely think to when they're happy — they're too busy loving their new look to type paragraphs on their phone. So if you're not asking, your review count is basically a random sample of your worst days. That's not who you are.
Google also weighs recency and steadiness. Ten reviews from 2021 tell searchers (and Google) that you might not even be open. A trickle of fresh ones every week says "this place is busy, current, and worth booking."
The ask that actually gets reviews (without being cringe)
Timing beats everything. The best moment is at checkout, while they're still glowing and looking in the mirror.
- Say it out loud, then make it stupid-easy. "If you love it, a Google review means the world to us — can I text you the link right now?" Then text it while they're standing there.
- Use a QR code at the front desk and on your mirror stations. One scan, straight to your review form. No hunting.
- For med spas: automate it. If you use a booking system like Vagaro, Boulevard, or Mangomint, turn on the post-appointment review request. Send it 2–3 hours after they leave, once the excitement (and the results) have set in.
One honest note: never gate reviews ("only leave one if it's 5 stars") and never buy them. Google catches it, and it can tank your profile. Grit, not shortcuts.
Reply to every review — yes, even the good ones
Replying tells Google your profile is active and tells future clients you actually care. But do it like a human, not a robot.
- Good review: Name the service. "Thanks, Marisa — so glad you love the balayage! Can't wait to see you for your touch-up." That word "balayage" quietly helps you get found for it.
- Bad review: Stay calm, take it to a phone call, never argue publicly. "We're sorry the results weren't what you hoped — we'd love to make it right. Please call us at [number]." Future clients read how you handle the bad ones way more closely than the good ones.
Your profile itself is doing half the selling
Reviews get people to click. Your profile has to close them. Most salons and spas leave money on the table here:
- Photos, constantly. Before/afters, the space, your team, a clean station. Real photos, not stock. Fresh photos signal an active, real business — post a few every week.
- List every service as its own item with prices where you can. "Microneedling," "Botox consultation," "beard trim," "silk press" — these help you show up when someone searches that exact thing near them.
- Turn on booking and messaging so people can act the second they're interested.
- Nail your hours, especially holidays. Nothing kills trust like showing up to a closed door.
- Use Google Posts for promos, new services, and openings this week. It's free real estate most competitors ignore.
One thing almost nobody checks: can everyone actually use your site?
Your Google profile sends people to your website to book. If that site is a mess on a phone, or unusable for someone with low vision or who can't use a mouse, you lose the booking — and it's a real accessibility problem, not a cosmetic one. We fix the actual code behind it (we're not lawyers, and we don't slap on one of those useless overlay widgets). A site everyone can book on is just more bookings.
The bottom line
You're not competing on skill — you're already winning that. You're competing on proof. More real reviews, a profile that looks alive, and a booking flow that works for everyone. Do this consistently and you stop being the best-kept secret in town.
