Med Spas, Salons & Barbershops: Your 5-Star Clients Love You — So Why Does Your Google Profile Tell a 3-Star Story?
Here's a frustrating truth: the client sitting in your chair right now is obsessed with you. They've rebooked three times, they tip well, they bring their sister. But the stranger scrolling Google at 9pm — the one deciding between you and the place two blocks over — doesn't see any of that. They see a profile that looks half-finished, a handful of old reviews, and a last post from eleven months ago.
The work is fire. The Google story is mid. Let's fix the story.
Why the gap exists (and it's not your fault)
You got into this to do balayage, dial in a perfect skin fade, or run a med spa that actually delivers results — not to babysit a Google dashboard. So the profile sat there while your real reputation grew in group chats and DMs. The problem is that word-of-mouth doesn't show up when someone types "med spa near me" or "men's haircut open now." Google shows them the public version of you. If that version is thin, you lose a client you'd have wowed in person.
The reviews gap: recency beats volume
You probably think you need more reviews. Sometimes. But what hurts you most isn't the count — it's the dates. A profile with 60 reviews where the newest is from last spring reads as "this place used to be good." A shop with 22 reviews, three of them from this month, reads as "this place is buzzing right now."
- Aim for a steady drip, not a flood. Two or three fresh reviews a week beats begging 40 people in one panicked afternoon. Google notices bursts and clients can smell them.
- Ask at the peak moment. That's right after they see the result in the mirror — the Botox settling, the fresh color, the beard shaped up. Not three days later in a text they'll ignore.
- Make it one tap. A short link or QR code on the mirror station, the checkout card, or the Square receipt. Every extra step loses people.
Reply to every review — yes, even the five-stars
Your replies are a sales pitch to the next reader. When someone raves about their lash lift, respond by name and mention the service: "So glad you love the volume set, Dana — see you for the fill in three weeks!" That quietly tells a stranger exactly what you do well. And when a bad one lands, a calm, human reply does more for your reputation than the complaint does damage.
The profile gap: the stuff new clients actually scan
Reviews get people interested. The rest of your profile closes them. Most salon and spa profiles leave money on the table here:
- Services list, filled out completely. Not "haircut" — list the fade, the beard trim, the color correction, the microneedling, the dermaplaning, with prices or ranges. People search for the specific thing they want.
- Photos that match your actual quality. This is the biggest one. Your before-and-afters are your portfolio. Clean, well-lit shots of real results, your space, and your team beat stock photos every time. Swap them in regularly so the profile looks alive.
- Hours that are actually right. Nothing kills trust like showing up to a "closed" sign your profile said was open. Update holiday hours too.
- Google Posts. A quick post about a new injector, a seasonal lash special, or walk-in Fridays keeps the profile fresh and gives Google a reason to show you more.
- Booking link that works. If your profile points to a dead link or a clunky page, you're handing the appointment to the next shop. Make it tap-to-book.
A simple weekly rhythm anyone at the front desk can run
- Send review requests to that week's happiest clients (the obvious ones).
- Reply to any new reviews — good and bad — within a day or two.
- Post one photo or update: a result, a special, a staff shout-out.
- Once a month, double-check services, hours, and that booking link.
None of this requires a marketing degree. It requires showing up for your profile the same way you show up for your chair. Do it consistently and your Google presence finally starts matching the reputation you already earned — which means more of those late-night scrollers become clients who walk in, see the work, and never leave.
