Law & Accounting Firms: The 5 Trust Signals Prospects Check Before They Ever Dial Your Number
Someone just got served, or got a scary letter from the IRS, or is finalizing a divorce. They're anxious, and they're doing the same thing everyone does: pulling out their phone and searching. Before they call a single firm, they're quietly running a background check on you — in about 90 seconds, from their couch.
They're not reading your practice-area page like a law review article. They're scanning for signals that say "these people are legit, current, and won't drop the ball." Here are the five they check — and how to make sure yours pass.
1. Does the site look like it was updated this decade?
Fair or not, prospects assume your website reflects how you run your practice. A cramped layout, tiny text, a stock photo of a gavel or a handshake, a copyright date that says 2016 — every one of those whispers "they're behind on everything else too."
You don't need flashy. You need clean, fast, and current: real photos of your actual office and attorneys or CPAs, readable type, and a design that doesn't force people to pinch-zoom on their phone. More than half your visitors are on mobile, mid-crisis. If your site fights them, they bounce to the firm that doesn't.
2. Can they figure out what you actually do — fast?
"Full-service legal solutions" tells a panicked person nothing. Neither does "comprehensive tax and advisory services." People search by their problem: DUI attorney, estate planning, small business taxes, wrongful termination, IRS audit representation.
Give each core practice area its own page, in plain English, naming the exact situations you handle. This does double duty: it reassures the human reading it, and it's exactly how Google figures out which searches to show you for. A single "Services" page listing eight areas in bullet points ranks for none of them well.
3. Do the reviews say others survived working with you?
For high-stakes, high-trust hires, your Google reviews are the closing argument. A prospect wants proof that other stressed people came out the other side satisfied. Three reviews from 2019 doesn't cut it against a firm with 60 recent ones.
- Ask every satisfied client at the natural close — case resolved, return filed, deal signed.
- Respond to every review, especially the critical ones, professionally and without disclosing confidential details.
- Keep it steady. A trickle of fresh reviews beats a one-time pile, both for humans and for your Maps ranking.
4. Are you even showing up in the local pack?
When someone searches "tax accountant near me" or "family law attorney [your city]," Google shows a map with three firms up top. That's where the calls go. If you're on page two, you're invisible during the exact moment someone's ready to hire.
Getting found here comes down to a well-optimized Google Business Profile — correct categories, hours, service areas, real photos — plus consistent name, address, and phone across the web, and location-specific pages on your site. Nobody can promise you the #1 spot (anyone who does is lying to you), but firms that do this consistently show up far more often than the ones that ignore it.
5. Can everyone actually use your site — including a screen reader?
Here's the one most firms miss. Law and accounting sites are prime targets for ADA accessibility demand letters, and the irony is brutal: you advise clients on compliance while your own site fails it. If a blind visitor can't navigate your contact form or read your PDF forms, that's both a lost client and a legal exposure.
We fix the real code — proper headings, labeled forms, keyboard navigation, color contrast — not a bolt-on overlay widget that courts have repeatedly rejected. (We're not a law firm, and we won't pretend to be; we just build sites that hold up.)
The bottom line
Your reputation in the courtroom or the boardroom is stellar. The problem is the person deciding whether to call never gets that far — they judge you on the website first. Fix these five signals and you stop losing clients before you ever meet them.
